Double winners at MICCAI

November 27, 2025

Congratulations to Shangqi Gao and Ines Machado, on their success at the 28th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2025) held in Korea in September.

Shangqi’s paper, ‘Evaluating Foundation Models with Pathological Concept Learning for Kidney Cancer‘ was awarded Best Paper (out of 37 accepted full papers). In this work, he introduced pathological concept learning to bring explainability and transparency into the decision-making process of applying foundation models to kidney cancer. He also demonstrated how this approach ensures fairness across gender and race – a crucial step toward trustworthy medical AI.

Ines has been elected to the Women in MICCAI (WiM) Board for the 2025–2027 term – a fantastic recognition of her contributions and leadership in the field.
